Challenges
Time flies! It’s already the fifth week of digital scholarship research. I really enjoyed the learning of different tools and methods in the past few weeks. I feel like I can envision the end product of my project more clearly each day.
One challenge I’ve encountered with my project is that I had no idea how to use my menu data set. I talked about it during the individual meeting with Carrie and Courtney. They told me how to clean up my data and make them usable. I’ll talk to Ken after I cleaned up my data, and he will suggest some ways of visualize them using Voyant.
Another challenge I faced was conducting interviews. I am a very introverted person. Due to my personality, talking to people I don’t know really makes me nervous. It takes a lot of courage from me to interview the restaurant owners. I overcame it by starting with the most familiar one, which is Pandaly. I talked to Eddie first, and he was really patient and nice. The interview went smoothly. It gave me a lot of confidence of doing another interview. I then talked to FUJI’s owner and felt more relaxed. I still need to talk to two more restaurant owners whom I have never met before. It is still a challenge for me, but I believe that I can handle it.
One challenge I will face soon would be the final presentation. I will use the trip to Lafayette as an opportunity to practice talking to other people about my project.
