Week 5 Changes

When I first started thinking about what I wanted my research/project to look like, back in April, I had a very clear idea. I wanted to make a documentary short showing the issues of human trafficking in the US. However, within the first few weeks of the fellowship I quickly realized this was not a reasonable goal. It would probably take these 8 weeks to do the background research alone. Because of that, I have much simplified what my end goal is. I want to create a website that brings awareness to the community about human trafficking in the United States, and more specifically in our area, and I want to educate them on what they can do to help. I am going to have a timeline, possibly created using StoryMap, that shows the progression of laws/acts being passed and any noticeable events that I might find having to do with the topic. I also plan on having maps, created using ArcGIS, that show the routes/highways in Pennsylvania where trafficking has taken place or been reported and have links to the articles about the incidents. I would say the main struggle I will have is making my project impactful, because I feel that something like a website isn’t as good at connecting/creating an internal obligation to help as a documentary short would be, where you would see lots of stirring images or interviews. I can include images or interviews on my site, it’s just a matter of obtaining them and being allowed to publish them, which I feel would be difficult with photos especially.
